First smiles, coos and recognising you
Early milestones are joyful signposts. Remember every baby is different, milestones are things most babies do by an age, not a deadline. This summarises CDC and NHS guidance.
Around 2 months
Many babies begin to calm when spoken to or picked up, look at your face, and give that first real social smile. They start making cooing sounds and react to loud noises.
Around 4 months
Babies often smile to get your attention, chuckle or laugh, coo and babble back when you talk, and turn toward voices. They increasingly recognise familiar people close up.
If you're concerned
If your baby isn't smiling by 2-3 months, isn't responding to sounds, or you have any worry about how they see, hear or develop, talk to your health visitor or GP, early support helps.
