There is a moment, somewhere in the middle of the first year, when a toy rolling behind the sofa becomes the most fascinating thing in the world. Your baby cranes forward, reaches out, and searches. Before this moment, out of sight really did mean gone. Now they know better. That shift is called object permanence, and it is one of the most significant leaps in early cognitive development.
What object permanence is
Object permanence is the understanding that people, objects, and animals continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched. The psychologist Jean Piaget, who spent decades studying how children's thinking develops, identified this concept as a cornerstone of what he called the sensorimotor stage, the first two years of life.
In the earliest weeks and months, a baby's world is entirely made up of what they can perceive right now. If a toy is covered by a cloth, it simply ceases to exist from the baby's perspective. There is no "hidden toy" in their mental model, so there is no reason to search for it. This is not a limitation to worry about. It is simply where development begins.
As the brain matures and experience accumulates, babies gradually build a mental representation of the world, an internal map that includes things they cannot currently see. That process takes most of the first two years to complete, and it unfolds in stages rather than all at once.
When object permanence develops
There is no single moment when object permanence switches on. It is a gradual process that follows a broad and variable timeline.
The earliest stirrings appear around four to five months, when babies begin to look briefly in the direction of an object that has moved out of view. By six to seven months, many babies will search for a partially hidden object, pulling away a cloth that covers only part of a toy. Between eight and 12 months, most babies will actively search for a toy that has been completely hidden, which is the most widely recognised sign that object permanence is developing well.
The CDC's developmental milestones note that looking for hidden objects is a typical behaviour to watch for around nine months, and the AAP confirms that this kind of searching behaviour is a healthy cognitive indicator in the second half of the first year. Full maturity, where a baby can track an object moved through several hiding places without getting confused, continues to develop until around 18 months to two years. The range is wide, and there is considerable variation between individual babies.
What it looks like at different ages
Watching object permanence emerge in real life is one of the quieter joys of the first year. Here is a rough guide to the kinds of behaviour you might notice:
- Four to five months: Your baby watches a toy move, then looks briefly at the spot where it disappeared. They do not search actively.

Here is how it works: you hide a toy under a cup at location A, and your baby searches for it there and finds it. You do this a few times. Then, while your baby watches, you move the toy to a new hiding spot at location B. When you let your baby search, they very often go back to location A, the place where they found it before, even though they just watched you move it.
This is not a mistake born of inattention. It reflects the early state of working memory and the difficulty of overriding a previously successful action. The baby's motor memory says "A worked last time" and that pull is stronger than the new visual information. By around 12 months, most babies are able to update their search and go directly to the correct new location.

Importantly, the A-not-B error is a performance limitation, not a knowledge gap. Research by Adele Diamond (1985) demonstrated that the error is driven by the immature prefrontal cortex's difficulty inhibiting a previously rewarded reaching action, not by failure to understand that the object moved. Separately, Renée Baillargeon (1987) used looking-time studies to show that babies as young as three and a half months already appear surprised when objects violate physical expectations, suggesting some implicit object knowledge exists well before babies can demonstrate it through reaching. Piaget's original timeline was based on what babies could do with their hands; what they understand begins earlier.
Why peek-a-boo is so powerful
Peek-a-boo is probably the oldest baby game in the world, and it turns out to be almost perfectly designed for this stage of development. Every time your face disappears behind your hands and reappears, your baby gets to practise the exact cognitive task that object permanence requires: holding a mental image of something they cannot currently see and predicting its return.
In the early months, the "boo" moment produces genuine surprise. Your baby's face lights up partly because each appearance still feels like a small miracle. By around eight to nine months, the game shifts. Your baby begins to anticipate your return before you reveal yourself. They may lean forward, smile in expectation, or even pull your hands down, which is a clear signal that their mental model is robust enough to predict what is coming.
There is a language dimension here too. "Where is it?" is one of the earliest communicative questions babies respond to with a searching glance or gesture. The back-and-forth of peek-a-boo, hiding and returning, also builds early conversational skills: the idea that interactions have turns, that something goes away, and that it comes back.
Other play that supports object permanence
You do not need a specialist toy kit to support this stage. Simple, everyday play is all it takes.
- Hiding toys under a cloth: Start with partial hiding, then progress to full coverage. Let your baby do the uncovering themselves.
- Cups and containers: Hide a small toy under one of two cups and let your baby find it. Nesting cups, where smaller cups disappear inside larger ones, are a natural extension of this.
- Pop-up toys: The action of something disappearing and reappearing is engaging and developmentally rich.
- Treasure basket play: A basket of everyday objects, a wooden spoon, a small tin, a scarf, invites babies to take things out, put them back, and rediscover them.
- Your own disappearing act: Hiding your face behind a book, a pillow, or even just your hands gives your baby the same practice as peek-a-boo in a different form.
Follow your baby's lead. If they lose interest in one game, try another. The goal is enjoyment, not drilling a skill.
Object permanence and separation anxiety
There is a tender irony in this milestone. Once your baby fully grasps that you exist when you are out of sight, separation anxiety often intensifies. Before this understanding developed, out of sight meant gone, which in its own way was peaceful. Now your baby knows you are somewhere else, and they have no way of knowing when you will be back.
The NHS notes that separation anxiety is common from around six months and often peaks around nine months, which maps closely onto the development of object permanence. This is not regression. It is the predictable emotional consequence of a significant cognitive leap. Your baby is not becoming more anxious in general. They are becoming more aware of how much you matter.
